U.S.A Immigration Update and Advice

U.S. census figures released in August 2006 said the number of immigrants living in the country has risen by 16 percent in five years but mainly in non-traditional places. California, New York, Texas, Florida, New Jersey and Illinois still have the highest number of immigrants but the Census Bureau noted that the migration pattern is expanding into the Upper Midwest, New England and the Rocky Mountain states, said The New York Times. The estimated number of immigrants is now 35.7 million or 12.4 percent of the nation’s population up from 11.2 percent in 2000. That amounts to an estimated 4.9 million additional immigrants added from 2000 up to August 2006. These figures do not include the millions of Americans residing in the U.S. who were born in the U.S.A. to immigrant parents.

Meanwhile several polls have shown that an immigration reform package proposed by U.S. President George Bush is not popular among most Republican lawmakers and voters. Although the president reportedly routinely claims not to put any stock in opinion polls, many of his colleagues do act according to especially the Gallup poll  - at least on the matter of immigration. And now the president also seems to be paying attention to the poll after all.

A Gallop April 2006 poll showed 81 percent of U.S. citizens agreed that illegal immigration is out of control. In his primetime national address on immigration Monday May 15, Bush’s speech mirrored that survey. The president proposed to significantly increase border security, especially the Arizona/Mexico border, an ongoing  troubling issue. He also proposed a program that would allow illegal immigrants to become citizens if they meet a number of specific requirements and a plan to enforce penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants. President Bush urged lawmakers to take action to stem the problem of illegal immigration.

However, two days later at least 73 House Republicans signed a letter saying they will never accept any plan that offers legal work and citizenship to undocumented workers and leadership aides said that number is expected to rise.

These events follow several weeks of expressed concerns by millions in the U.S. and carried frequently by the media, over illegal immigrants, entering, living and working in the U.S. as well as what to do with them. Truly it’s fair to say that by the look of things, those issues do not seem to be going away anytime soon. A Breaking News release at patrickoneil.com on May 8, 2006 revealed that a just concluded poll by Zogby Interactive shows that immigration has joined terrorism and the war in Iraq as one of U.S. voters’ top concerns. The survey also found strong regional, partisan and generational differences. It shows that Republicans living in the western United States – primarily Caucasians - and the middle-aged and elderly are the main ones worrying about immigration. More than half, 53 percent of Republicans surveyed, said immigration is their major concern while for Democrats – a group made up of mainly ‘so called minorities’, the figure was 10 percent. The poll further shows that this means more headaches for President George Bush as only 13 percent in the poll said he is doing a good job on immigration and worst of all, only 9 percent said he is doing a good job on border security.

What this means for Illegal Immigrants

There is no doubt that for many years the U.S. has been one of the most tolerant countries to illegal immigrants. To that extent, the country’s illegal population now stands at 11 million. Bearing in mind what the poll shows - illegal immigrants can expect a very rough time at least for the next year or two. First of all, because a significant number of voters are indicating that they think the government is too tolerant toward illegal immigrants, it’s logical to expect the government to start showing notable signs of intolerance to undocumented residents, in a bid to regain the confidence of the populace. Therefore immigration law enforcers can be expected at places of employment, at shopping malls, at the homes and just about anywhere people are, albeit secretly, more vigilant than before, in an effort to find undocumented immigrants and deport or jail them, to deter others. So, it is now a matter of what illegal immigrants can do to protect themselves. Basically they need to try as hard as possible to become legal  - definitely by lawful means.
