The American Academy of Periodontology in July 1998 launched an effort to educate the general public about new findings that support what dental professionals have been saying for years: infections in the mouth can play havoc in other parts of the body. Get a dental check-up.
Osteoporosis Researchers have suggested there is a link between Osteoporosis and bone loss in the jaw. Studies suggest that Osteoporosis might lead to the loss of teeth because the density of the bone that supports the teeth may decrease causing them to no longer have solid foundation.
Heart Disease There are several theories that link periodontal (gum disease) with heart disease. One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream — attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels)-and-contribute to clot formation. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, which can lead to a heart attack. Another possibility is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque build up, which may contribute to swelling of the arteries.
Stroke Studies have also pointed to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. In one of the studies that looked at the casual relationship of oral infection as a risk factor for stroke, people diagnosed with acute carebrovascular ischemia were found more likely to have an oral infection when compared to those in a controlled group. You should get frequent dental check-up.
Pregnancy Problems It has been well documented for a long time that factors such as smoking, alcohol use and drug use contribute to mothers having premature babies and babies with low birth weight. And medical professionals are now suggesting that periodontal disease is a new risk factor. Pregnant women who have periodontal disease may be up to seven times more likely to have a baby that is born either too early or too small. It appears that periodontal disease triggers increased levels of biological fluids that induce labor. Further data suggests that women whose periodontal condition worsens during pregnancy may have an even higher risk of having a premature baby. Every infection is a cause for concern among pregnant women as it poses risks to the health of the baby. It is therefore highly recommended that women considering pregnancy have a periodontal evaluation (a dental check-up) as a precaution.
Diabetes Diabetics are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, probably because they are more susceptible to contracting infections. Notably, periodontal disease is often considered to be the sixth complication of diabetes. Diabetics whose diabetes are not under control are at even greater risks. Extensive research suggests that there is a two-fold relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes. From one perspective periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who have diabetes to control their blood sugar. The second suggestion is that severe periodontal disease can increase blood sugar, contributing to increased instances when the body functions with a high blood sugar. Findings from a study carried out to examine people with diabetes who also have periodontal disease, revealed that diabetics whose periodontal infections were treated, markedly improved the management of their diabetes. A dental check-up is highly recommended.
Respiratory Diseases Findings by Scientists suggest that the bacteria that grow in the oral cavity can be inhaled into the lung to cause respiratory diseases like pneumonia. This is especially so in people with periodontal disease. Scientists are led to believe that these respiratory bacteria can travel into the lung from the oral cavity and cause infection.
